A Standard in Homebuilding Craftsmanship for Over 40 Years
When Carl Kerby, President, founded the Westhills Company in 1970, he had already worked extensively in the home building industry for a decade, first for a building supply company and then for a contractor. Carl knew from the start that home building would become his life’s work and that he would be a "hands-on type" of builder. “I have always enjoyed working in the field,” he says. “I still visit job sites every day. I want to make sure the whole process, from properly placing the home on the site all the way thru the final trim detailing, is done to the highest standards we've set at Westhills.”
Having a team of experts working on each home is an important key to his success, maintains Kerby. Westhills employs a staff of highly-skilled building professionals who have earned Westhills the reputation as the Valley's finest builder. Teamwork, maintains Kerby, is the key. “Every member of the organization is important to our success. It takes each of them to achieve results that have earned us our reputation.”
Westhills Company builds twelve to fifteen homes a year that range in size from 1,600 to 12,000 square feet and in price from $250,000 to $1 million. “Our niche,” Kerby says, “is 2,600 to 4,000 square feet contract custom, but we also build and sell a number of spec homes each year. We have been successful with speculative homes primarily because we ‘take the bugs out of the plans’ before we build the house. We have a reputation of giving people what they are looking for.”
A great deal of research goes into the creation of each Westhills home. “We attend home shows, kitchen and bath shows, and visit other markets to evaluate the latest trends,” Kerby says. Innovative design, he adds, is high on their buyers’ priority lists, as well as lots of detail work, bonus areas, quality materials, and luxurious kitchens and baths.
"Mrs. Cannon and I want to commend Mr. Kerby and all of the Westhills personnel who constructed our new home. We are VERY pleased with the results. We selected Westhills to be the general contractor because of its reputation as a premier builder and because of its unquestionable integrity."

Kerby says that quantity has never been one of the company’s goals; instead the Westhills team focuses its attention on putting extra touches in each home. For example, they work closely with the subcontractors and the customers to ensure that electrical receptacles and HVAC outlets are properly placed. "When you walk into a Westhills house, it has a different feel –– an elegant feel, we're told. A lot of it is the quality of our finish and trim work," says Kerby.
It is quality even in the things you cannot see that sets a Westhills home apart. Kerby is meticulous in his trade and feels a home should be built carefully from the inside-out.
Westhills Company also provides professional remodeling and renovation services. Whether it's a kitchen, bathroom, family room, basement, living area or porch patio, deck -- or an entire home -- our experienced team of professional builders can breathe new life and energy into your existing home. We have become the Valley's most trusted name in remodeling services for over 40 years and are happy to provide examples and references of our work. To view our "Before and After" portfolio,

ABOUT THE FOUNDER
A lifelong resident of Waynesboro, Virginia, Carl W. Kerby is a graduate of Waynesboro High School and Fishburne Military School. Shortly after completing his formal education and military training in 1957, Carl began what would become a lifelong career in – and love of – the homebuilding industry. Since founding Westhills Company in 1970, Carl has devoted his time, energy and passion to designing and constructing high quality homes throughout his beloved Shenandoah Valley. Over the years, Carl has personally developed many residential communities, town homes and single-family homes throughout Augusta County, making Westhills the region’s premier builder of both custom and spec homes. Carl and the Westhills team have received many regional and national awards for their design excellence and construction of energy-efficient homes. Carl and Westhills were featured on the cover story of Virginia Builder/Architect magazine in 1994 as a premier Virginia designer, builder and developer. Most recently, Westhills was profiled by Charlottesville-based HomeStyle magazine in a feature article that called attention to the high quality homes Westhills has become known for. Such accolades are nice, of course, but what Carl enjoys more than anything is the experience of watching homeowners turn a Westhills-built house into their home.
Professionally, Carl serves on the Board of Directors and is three-time President of the Augusta Home Builders Association. Additionally, he served on the Augusta Medical Center’s Building Committee during the construction of the new regional hospital.
Carl is also very active in community service. He is a long-standing member and has served on the Board of Directors of the noon Rotary Club of Waynesboro. He is also a charter member of the Valley Mission Board and has been recognized for his commitment to the Valley Vocational Technical Center Building Trades School. Carl has proudly served the Fishburne-Hudgins Educational Foundation, Inc., the Board of Trustees for Fishburne Military School, since 1996. As Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, Carl enjoys sharing his professional expertise with his alma mater, and has renovated several rooms at Fishburne and remodeled the Fishburne infirmary to make room for development offices. In 1999 Fishburne honored Carl by naming him “Alumnus of the Year” for his tireless dedication to the School’s success.
Carl and his wife, Sara “Scottie” Kerby, are lifelong members of Waynesboro’s First Baptist Church where Carl has served for many years on a variety of church committees. Carl and Scottie have a son, Kendall, who owns a home interior furnishings and floral design firm in Williamsburg, Virginia, The Seasons of Williamsburg.
